Jacob Ekström (1893−1950)

Organist, composer and, choir leader Jacob Ekström was born 29 May 1893 in Trosa and died in Gävle on 18 June 1950. He was educated as an organist at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Stockholm where he ended his studies in 1914. Beginning in 1916 he was employed as an organist and choir leader in Gävle. He also composed a large number of chamber music works including songs, organ and piano pieces, string quartets and four symphonies.

Life

Childhood and student years

Jacob Ekström’s mother died while he was still quite young. Shortly afterwards his father disappeared from his life. He also had an older brother who died young. Jacob Ekström then grew up in the Malmö area with two aunts who were both active within the Baptist movement. Ekström applied to, and was accepted into the Musikkonservatoriet (the Royal Conservatory of Music) in Stockholm. After several years his aunts thought that he had studied enough and that it was time for him to serve as a musician in the Baptist movement.

Jacob Ekström quickly earned the reputation of being very gifted. Besides organ performance he also studied composition with Ernst Ellberg who was one of the era’s most prominent musical figures. Through the years, Ellberg taught a string of composers who would later gain great success – among them was Lars-Erik Larsson. Ekström’s aunts strove to get him to break off his studies in order to work as an organist within the Baptist movement. His teacher, Otto Olsson, fought in vain for Ekström to continue his studies, and in the end the aunts got their way. Ekström left his studies in 1914 before they were completed and left Stockholm at the same time. Most written sources about him refer to him with the title, music director.

Move to Gävle

Several years after ending his studies, Jacob Ekström moved to Gävle where he was employed as an organist and choirmaster in the Baptist’s Immanuelskyrkan (Immanuel Church). A short time later he met his wife Elvira (née Myrén) and in 1919 their son Hans was born.

Five years later, for unknown reasons, Jacob Ekström left the Baptist congregation in Gävle. He quickly found a new job as the organist within the newly formed Staffan’s congregation that was a part of the Svenska kyrkan (the Swedish Lutheran Church). Church activities took place in an assembly hall in a district of Gävle called Brynäs until 1932, when the construction of Staffan’s Church was completed. At the inauguration that was led by archbishop Erling Eidem, music by Jacob Ekström and others was performed.

When the organist position at Staffan’s Church was to be formally put into place five years after the inauguration, Jacob Ekström was chosen for the position. He had been the organist and choirmaster for the congregation since 1924. However the Church Council’s choice was challenged by a parishioner. According to the newspaper Aftonbladet, the reason was that another candidate for the job with good qualifications had been neglected, while Ekström was not formally qualified to seek the organist position. The matter was taken further to the Kungliga Musikaliska akademien (the Royal Swedish Academy of Music), but Ekström was eventually hired anyway.

Adulthood

Claes Holmgren, the current cathedral organist in Visby and former organist at Staffan’s Church, has devoted himself to the music of Jacob Ekström and earlier was even in contact with his son Hans – now deceased – who spoke of his father and the family’s time in Gävle. Among other aspects, Hans Ekström spoke of his father’s feelings of inferiority toward the organist and composer Gottfrid Berg, who worked in Gävle’s largest congregation, Heliga Trefaldighet (the Holy Trinity).

Unlike his colleague Berg, Jacob Ekström had no students. Even so, the family had a good income thanks to a rental property they owned that gave them a relatively stable economy besides the job as organist. On a personal level it appears that Jacob Ekström had severe mood swings that seem to be based on his unhappiness with himself and his achievements in life. This also applied to his own compositions, which he sometime would literally rip to pieces. In 1946, for unclear reasons, the family left their home in Brynäs. Several years before his death in 1950 he also stopped composing and displayed what we would call today symptoms of burnout.

Works

Jacob Ekström was a very prolific composer and during his early years at the Brynäs assembly hall wrote a large number of organ pieces, songs for various types choral ensembles – with and without accompaniment – as well as solo songs and other chamber music. Under the pseudonyms ‘J. E. Talby’ and ‘J.E. Toby’ he also composed popular songs and music for entertainment in smaller forms, with titles such as ‘Sommar-hambo’, ‘Karneval’ and ‘Den första valsen’.

When Staffan’s Church with its symphonic organ, built by E.A. Setterquist & Son, Örebro, was completed in 1932, it was like a shot in the arm for Jacob Ekström’s composing. He began to develop his own more personal aesthetic – even though it continued to be influenced by role models from romanticism. From the end of the decade he also began to write in larger forms, including both of his cello concertos from 1939 and 1940, and an organ concerto in 1941. These were followed by three string quartets and four quintets for various instrumentations. Beginning in 1944 and for the following three years, he composed four symphonies and a concerto for oboe and chamber orchestra, in which he further develops his expressive range and takes on a somewhat more contemporary musical style.

In addition to the music that Jacob Ekström himself performed in Staffan’s Church in Gävle during his employment, and the organ works that Claes Holmgren has performed and even recorded, a great part of Ekström’s large creative output has yet to be premiered. One exception is the Second Symphony that was premiered by the Gävle symphoniorkester at the Gävle Theater on 19 January 1947. Both the Aftonbladet and Svenska Dagbladet were there and reviewed the work – however the reviews were unsigned.

Aftonbladets assessment speaks of a ‘modern Beethoven with a tonal emphasis on modern and an inclination toward P. B. [Wilhelm Peterson-Berger].’ and highlights the originality – above all in the instrumentation. Svenska Dagbladet considers the symphony to be dominated by a classical formality, but that the harmonic aspects are unmistakably modern. Both newspapers noted that the concert was well attended and that Jacob Ekström ‘who was present in the theatre was energetically acclaimed’.
