Work comment

Kraus writes in a letter to Abraham Clewberg-Edelcrantz (according to van Boer, probably before 5 May): The music opens with an Entrata which continues until the King and the Court have taken their seats. After this, the first part of the actual Burial Cantata begins, and it has to be performed without interruption ... After the burial and the psalm sung during the same, the second part of the music will be performed, and this part must, as the first one, continue until the end, without interruption. After this follows the Prayer, the Blessing, the Psalm and finally, exit music.

According to van Boer, this work includes a re-use of Kraus's Sinfonia da chiesa (Ouverture / "Ouvertüre per la chiesa") in D minor, VB 147, movement no. I, Largo.

See separate post for Kraus's Sorgemusik över Gustav III. I. Bisättningsmusik c-moll [Funeral music for Gustav III. I. Funeral Symphony (Symphonie funèbre) in C minor], VB 148
