When this work was composed, Carl Ludvig Lithander had been the organist of the St. Nikolai Cathedral for nine years. No doubt, he had composed other works during his time there, but those have not been preserved. Practically all Nicander's other compositions, such as piano pieces and works for piano and melodic instruments, were publicly published. The Cantata differs from these smaller works by its more comprehensive score, showing that Lithander's ability as a composer surpassed the aforementioned published pieces.
This work was composed for organ (specifically for the then new Bucholz organ!) and a five-part vocal ensemble. The solo passages were no doubt performed by singers in the ensemble. It has also been established that Lithander himself played the organ when the Cantata was premiered.
